The Golden Compass is a cinematic adaptation of the book The Northern Light by Philip Pullman, and is the first part of the trilogy called The Dark Material. There are inevitable references to The Lord of the Rings: a trilogy, fantasy worlds, adventure, visual beauty, mysterious and powerful objects, etc.

The movie is directed by Chris Weitz and starts famous actors and actresses like Dakota Blue Richards, Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig or Eva Green. There are also some non-human characters like, for example, the protagonist of this wallpaper: Iorek Byrnison. It is a type of enormous polar bear whose voice is by Sir Ian McKellen (the actor who played Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings in yet another reference). The main object in this movie is a type of golden compass, a mysterious artefact able to reveal to whoevr asks it the answer to any question, but whose functions and meanings are very difficult to interpret.
